How to Get the Email Address of Anyone Who Sends You a Message on LinkedIn

Did you know that there is a way to see the email address of anyone who communicates with you on LinkedIn? To do this, you must enable email notifications so you receive a message when you are contacted by another LinkedIn user.

Below is an example of an email notification I received after a LinkedIn user communicated with me:

Steps to identify the email address of the sender

1.  Open the email in outlook and go to the file tab:

2. Click on ‘properties’ and you will see the popup below:

3. Hidden in the “Internet headers” section is the users real email address.

Reminder: This trick works for any contact or reply on Linkedin as long as you’re receiving notifications in your outlook email address.

  1. This is not true; If the user has not logged their email address for the reply, it will only provide you with a “reply via LinkedIn” address. If the user has allowed replies to be sent via their personal address, then just clicking reply on your outlook message will have the desired effect. Having just tried it on around 10 different examples, only the one’s where I could pretty easily find their email address anyway (i.e. by clicking reply, or where access is available on their profile unrestricted) did this method work. Sorry!

    1. Hey Anon and Dawn, Thanks for the replies. I am sorry you found it did not work for you. Not sure why as I have not had any problems to include being able to use this method with those that have not allowed replies to be sent. Also I am aware of the replying in outlook, but I have found that it does not always work, and the times it does not the method I outlined does. Not sure why it did not work for you. However given those other methods work for you your all set either way.

  2. 99% of the time when someone sends me a connection request, I just click “reply” in outlook at it puts their email address right there in the field.

  3. I know you can reply to a msg that someone sends you in LI…I do it all the time. It does not populate the persons personal e-mail for me but rather a LI e-mail address that is scrambled that looks something like this (via linkedin) 24501749_c8d3691c-c327-4005-8b04-cdd49..

  4. This got me extremely excited – I hate not being able to directly and being forced to log into LinkedIn.

    I tried this method immediately. I’m finding it only works on invitations ie if the person invites you to connect. If you send them and InMail the header doesn’t help. Unless I’m doing something wrong all I get is:

  5. Is this specific to a newer version of Outlook? I am using Outlook 2007 and I’m not getting the same results.

      1. That is odd as I also use 2010. Perhaps it is something internal to LinkedIn or some kind of security protocol on your computer. Not sure, only goes to show you that sometimes some methods do not work for all. You can always add Connectifier to Chrome as it will help also. Or try using rapportive. Again sorry it does not work for you guys.

    Connie, I know that anytime I have received communications via LinkedIn inmail, it appears in my personnel email. If I check the header and search it, I see their email. Below is a snipit of the header from a message sent to me via linkedin inmail, from a person who just asked me a question.

  7. 99% of the time, if you hit reply to a message sent using normal LI means, then the email address populates. If you hit reply to a ‘purchased’ inmail, then its an LI email address, but the message will still reach them.

  8. This has been working for me for many years until just a few months ago. Anyone else notice a change? I get on the average 20 new connection requests per month and had relied on the email header to verify identity and also build an email list.
